Gulf Oil Spill: The Upcoming Disaster That We Can Prevent

With the recent oil spill disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, our charity is refocusing its efforts to protect low-income families along the Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida and Texas coastline. This is due to the impending floods caused by the upcoming hurricane seasons. This year (and for years to come), the floods caused by the hurricanes will mix sea water and oil - dumping the oil on shore and into people's homes. We aim to strengthen/ waterproof Gulf coast homes before the next hurricane strikes by:

* Fixing cracked home foundations so the water/oil can't leak in
* Installing hurricane proof windows so the winds can't get in
* Floodproofing house doors
* Anchoring home roofs better
* Doing all the little things that cost too much money for low-income families to do - but all things that can save their lives in the next storm.

If we can keep the water out, we can keep the oil out!

IGS Campus: a national college program

IGS Campus gives college students the opportunity to intern with IGS, creating and developing their own IGS chapter on campus. We work with your professors and university to open an official IGS chapter that you decide how to operate, always striving to meet the following goals:

- Find people that need IGS's help and organize projects to help them

- Increase awareness of our mission to protect people from disasters

- Increase the number of students in the chapter

- Hold events to raise funds for your chapter's volunteer projects

To begin your IGS Campus chapter, send an email to

with the subject heading: IGS CAMPUS. To get you started, IGS's Founder, Philip Gilpin, will come to your campus and speak to your class or group to help you launch the chapter.

These photos are from Philip's presentation at the Univerity of Vermont

Additionally...

Thanks to the good people at Facebook and the Network For Good, you can now organize your own IGS CAMPUS volunteer trip, create your own fundraising goals, recruit friends and keep track of your progress all on Facebook!

Simply go to the International Green Shield "Causes" page (click here) and join the cause.

Once you've joined, there are three easy steps to get started:

1) Invite your friends to join the cause

2) Set a fundraising goal ($1,000 by the New Year, etc.)

3) Check in every week to see how your friends are helping you reach your goal.

All the money you raise on Facebook goes directly to IGS. You don't have to worry about handling any money.

If you are raising money for a specific volunteer project, email us at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it with the subject heading "CAUSES" and let us know your goal and what project you want it to go towards!

IGS Build: an international volunteer program

IGS Build is an international volunteer program to save low-income children and families from natural disasters by integrating newer, stronger and more sustainable materials & architectural designs into homes and schools so they are strong enough to survive the next disaster.
